Having basic sketches in hand, SmileyRides had a vision for what they wanted the product to become.  Taking these initial sketches and producing a more detailed conceptual design, SmileyRides was excited to see the vision come to life.  After the conceptual design phase was completed, the detailed design process began and developed the conceptual design into a fully functional and manufacturable design. Having a functional design allowed SmileyRides to not only visualize, but conduct customer feedback and make the necessary changes to fit the needs of customers.

Using parametric design/engineering software, we were able to create their initial concept and make modifications relatively easy during design review processes.  Once a final design was approved, prototype parts were created using 3D Printing to quickly evaluate the design.  Compared to conventional fabrication/manufacturing methods, the cost of using the 3D Printing process was over 1200% less and was done in 4-5 days compared to 6-8 weeks.  This lower cost solution allowed for multiple prototypes to be produced.

Developed for a team of young entrepreneurs, this GoPro accessory can replace over a dozen mounts for your GoPro, iPhone, audio recorder & lights with a simple to use, compact and hands-free mount.

The concept was first developed for Startup Weekend Honolulu 2015 where the idea needed to be developed in only 54 hours.  The initial concept was to have a clip that could attach a Go Pro camera to the front of your hat for hands free video action shots. Using our 3D Design process, we were able to take the initial idea and develop a functional design.  Several factors needed to be accounted for throughout the design phase.  Since the team only had 54 hours to design and produce a prototype, 3D Printing was the perfect fit.  Several versions of the prototype were produced in a short period of time that allowed the team to test and conduct customer validation studies.

Using our design and 3D Printing process, we were able to not only save thousands of dollars in prototyping costs, but reduced development time from weeks to just days. The cost savings by using 3D Printing allowed the team to make several versions which were validated through the customer discovery process and led to the final production ready design.

Created to help consumers become more environmentally safe, the FOG Safe product will reduce the amount of oil and grease that gets disposed of and ultimately reduce the amount of oil waste that makes it into landfills, gardens, water sources, streams, and oceans.

Using our design and 3D Printing process, prototype molds were created to produce a low volume quantity for final testing and marketing integration.  Using 3D Printed molds compared to traditional molding materials saved the customer more than $8,000 in tooling costs and reduced development time from months to weeks.

NS Designs had an idea for joystick handle design that would allow users to experience the look and feel of a flight simulator while attached to and used in a specific application.

By using our industrial design process, NS Designs was able to visualize their design concept that would include all of the features they were looking for. After the initial design sketches were produced, design elements were transferred into a 3D design that would eventually be used to create a prototype for beta and market testing.

3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing

3D Printing or commonly known as Additive Manufacturing is a process that builds parts using material that applies successive layers until the entire part is built.

Subtractive Manufacturing

Conventional manufacturing process such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) to remove volume from a block of material.  This process is used for both prototype, low volume and high volume production parts and can produce parts with high precision and tolerance.

Subtractive Manufacturing is somewhat limited by not being able to produce parts with undercuts areas or features with extreme curvatures.

Value of 3D Printing

3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing makes is possible to produce your design as is.  With the use of support materials and advanced layering methods, these parts can be produced with undercuts and curvatures.  In addition to the benefit of being able to produce whatever is designed, the 3D Printing process in some or most cases is more economical than CNC machining.  With a 3D Printer in house, prototyping time can be reduced from days to hours, producing parts quicker and more cost effectively.

With a conceptual design already outlined, Sachi Kitchenware needed to go from a conceptual design to a fully functional and manufacturable design. In searching for companies to help him develop his idea, the challenge became finding someone with expertise not only in prototyping, but designing his concept for the Injection Molding process.

Using parametric design/engineering software, we were able to create their initial concept and make modifications relatively easy during design review processes.  Once a final design was approved, prototype parts were created using 3D Printing to quickly evaluate the design.  Compared to conventional fabrication/manufacturing methods, the cost of using the 3D Printing process was over 400% less and was done in 4-5 days compared to 3-4 weeks.  This lower cost solution allowed for slight design modifications without the cost of re-tooling or re-making the parts.

Using their 3D design process, I was able to view and verify my design before any prototypes were built, which saved me thousands of dollars in re-work or modifications. I was able to use the design files to generate photorealistic renderings that I used for advertising and marketing. Their experience and knowledge with molding and tooling helped improve my product and gave me a clear understanding on how it was going to be manufactured. 3D Innovations has been a great full service solutions provider in helping me take my product from concept to the manufacturing phase.
