*UPDATE (12/14/2015): The results are in, and the Menehune Hat Clip tied for 1st Runner Up in the Global Startup Battle! Such an accomplishment for these hardworking students. Way to go!

**UPDATE (12/7/2015): The Menehune Hat Clip is a Champions Track Finalist in the Global Startup Battle 2015! The Championship Track judges will now be scoring the 12 remaining teams and a winner will be announced later this week.

Last weekend our President and Chief 3D Officer, Collin Kobayashi, had the honor of participating as a team mentor at Startup Weekend Honolulu. This was the eighth Startup Weekend Honolulu event but the first time 3D Innovations was involved.

Before the event Collin was approached by entrepreneurs Evan and Kari Leong and asked about participating as an additional mentor for their two oldest children, 12-year-old Buddy and 10-year-old Koko, who were eager to test out an idea at Startup Weekend. Their children had the idea to develop a new camera hat clip that was both durable and secure, from this idea the Menehune Hat Clip was born. Both children are avid sports enthusiasts and found that current hat straps for camera mounts were flimsy, which did not provide for a stable and secure mounting system. Both boys experienced this problem first hand while trying to capture ‘POV’ (point-of-view) shots while surfing and knew that there had to be a better way.

One of the children had seen a 3D printer at school, but had never used it before. He was intrigued by the idea that you can design something with software and in a very short time, be able to produce the part into a physical prototype. Collin was able to teach them software basics while educating them about additive manufacturing technology.

menehune“This was my first Startup Weekend event and wasn’t really sure what to expect other than having two days to not only come up with a design, but get as much market research conducted as possible and develop a prototype that met the needs of users. Combining my expertise in product development and their parents vast knowledge in business/entrepreneurship, we equipped the kids with a toolkit to get the project completed. This was not only an educational experience for them, but for us as well. It was rewarding to see them learn and ask questions about why we needed to do things a certain way,” said Collin.

In the end, these hardworking students were satisfied with both the design and prototypes, and turned their focus on presenting the idea to a panel of judges and audience members. The Menehune Hat Clip was the first prize winner and the brothers were quite possibly the youngest participants across Global Startup Battle 2015, which connect Startup Weekend events in over 250 cities around the world. We can’t wait to see the Menehune Hat Clip push forward and into stores one day.

2015 Hawaii STEM Conference: CAD Competition

April 20, 2015
3D Innovations

stemconfThe 6th Annual Hawaii STEM Conference concluded this past weekend and we had the honor of being part of it once again. This year 3D Innovations held a CAD competition that was focused on having teams develop a design solution based on an existing problem presented to them. The challenge was to design a custom bike light that will easily mount to the handle bars on a child size bike. The students utilized Solidworks to produce their digital designs. The challenging part for the teams involved taking the requirements they were given and simultaneously addressing all of the design specifications.

Once the students had completed the task, they then presented their design outcome, photo renderings, anticipated material costs and packaging designs/options to a panel of expert judges. Maui High School presented an outstanding design solution and came in first place! This team was cohesive and had great communication which helped them take the lead. It was great to see that all of the student participants in the competition showed determination and strong problem solving skills.

We would be remiss without mentioning the keynote speaker at the conference, Titan Gilroy of Titan America Manufacturing. Titan grew up in Hawaii and fought an uphill battle for a good portion of his life and has come out on top. He is the proud owner of a CNC machining company and a major proponent of american manufacturing. His story really resonated with the audience and his charisma was inspiring. You can learn more about his company on the official Titan America MFG website and more about Titan himself on the Alliance for American Manufacturing website.

3D Printing Predictions for 2015

December 10, 2014
3D Innovations

As 2014 is rapidly coming to a close, people are looking forward to 2015 and wondering what the new year will bring. Everyone seems to be gazing into a crystal ball and now the internet is buzzing with lists containing what products and technology will be hot in 2015.

prototype-3d-printing-innovations-100One technology that is sure to turn heads again in 2015 is 3D printing. As an engineering and design firm we are always interested in the manner in which 3D printing will become more mainstream. 3D printing is a fascinating technology that is currently able to assist businesses in a variety of ways but, we know that there is still so much more this technology can accomplish.

We have found two great lists that focus on 3D printing technology in 2015. One list from Tech AdvisorTech trends 2015: 3D printing grows up, focuses on the continued growth and innovations within the 3D printing (a/k/a additive manufacturing) industry. The other list was produced by GartnerGartner Identifies the Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2015, and focuses on technology that will impact all aspects of business. Below are excerpts about the future of 3D printing from both articles…

3D Printing Insight from Tech Advisor: “Where the growth is really going to happen is in commercial manufacturing. This is an area where 3D printing is so well established that as a concept it hasn’t been exciting for a few years now. Here it’s new developments such as affordable multi-material printing that are going to get product, furniture, fashion and technology designers exciting – and we’ll all reap the rewards of their efforts.” Tech Advisor goes on to mention the expanded use of 3D printing in medicine. Advancements with prosthetic prototypes is sure increase and hopefully become mainstream to help keep medical costs low. (View more from Tech Advisor.)

Gartner’s 3D printing prediction: “3D Printing: Worldwide shipments of 3D printers are expected to grow 98 percent in 2015, followed by a doubling of unit shipments in 2016. 3D printing will reach a tipping point over the next three years as the market for relatively low-cost 3D printing devices continues to grow rapidly and industrial use expands significantly. New industrial, biomedical and consumer applications will continue to demonstrate that 3D printing is a real, viable and cost-effective means to reduce costs through improved designs, streamlined prototyping and short-run manufacturing.” (View more from Gartner.)

What do you think about these predictions? Seem accurate or miss the mark for you? Please share your thoughts on the future of 3D printing with us!
