Product of the Week: Sarvi Dock

December 5, 2014
3D Innovations

sarviIt seems that we cannot go anywhere without our cell phones these days. Whether we are tied to our phones for work reasons, family reasons or because it holds all the details of our life, the fact is that cell phones today are intertwined into our daily lives and routines. Sarvi Dock is a cell phone docking system that fits your life. It can be frustrating to remove your phone case each time you need to dock or charge your phone. This docking system is elegantly designed to allow your phone to stay in its case while being docked. The sleek and unobtrusive design of the Sarvi Dock makes this product really stand out.

“Sarvi Dock was the first dock designed with cases as the main focus. We found that today most people use protective cases of different sizes to safeguard their devices. Finding a dock to fit protective cases can be difficult if not impossible. This is why we created Sarvi Dock – a charge and sync dock that works with any smartphone or tablet, in portrait or landscape orientation virtually any case and cable.”

You can learn more about the way in which this docking system has been engineered and see a range of prototypes on the Sarvi Dock Kickstarter page or the official company website.

Prototypes: Do I really need one?

November 13, 2014
3D Innovations

“You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas won’t get you anywhere.” – Lee Iacocca

If you have recently been hit with an idea that you feel has commercial value and you want to take this idea one step further and build a business around it you might be asking yourself this crucial question…”Do I need a prototype?” Although you are not required to have a prototype to file a patent application, having a prototype simplifies this process and makes the process of going from an idea to a tangible business much easier.

3d designWhat is a prototype? A prototype is a depiction, example or even a finished and functioning product. You need one if you intend to test your idea, to improve your product and its component parts and ultimately to show or demonstrate it to investors, manufacturers or buyers for example.

Why should I prototype my idea? Prototyping gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your idea to potential buyers, get feedback from test groups and refine your product design. A prototype is almost seen as a necessity these days when you are trying to obtain funding from investors. A tangible object that investors can see function provides a better understanding of the product and its value.

It is also important to note that prototyping lets you finalize the best design possible before sending your product off to be manufactured. You will undoubtedly find flaws in your initial design and having a prototype lets you work out all of these kinks beforehand.

How much does a prototype cost? The answer to this question depends on a number of different factors, such as: size, components and complexity. To get a better idea of what your specific idea would cost to prototype we suggest that you find a firm that you are comfortable with, potentially has experience in the industry you would be going into and really understands your vision for the product to get a quote.

Product of the Week: Anton Strainer Bowl

November 7, 2014
3D Innovations

antonThe Anton strainer bowl aims to thoroughly clean your produce and eliminate the hassle of using (and cleaning) multiple dishes when cooking. The ingenious product design of this strainer allows you to reduce your water usage by 60% when properly cleaning your produce. With the Anton strainer bowl you no longer need to strain your produce and pasta in the bottom of the sink, but can instead leave it firmly on the kitchen counter; thus reducing the chance to bacteria contamination.

“We designed the Anton strainer bowl with the intention of having a sculptural object with a smooth handle that allows the liquid to be drained with a simple tilt. The handle allows you to drain the water on your own terms – in a sink, a cup or in a plant. Imagine that, a kitchen implement that allows you to be environmentally responsible twice. It fits beautifully on the counter and easily in the fridge or in the dishwasher.”

On the Kickstarter page you can view the CAD renderings of the Anton strainer bowl along with images of the prototype being 3D printed. We love seeing great design come to life!

Learn more about the Anton Strainer Bowl on Kickstarter or the official website. You can also follow the company on Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube!

Product of the Week: Sa (The Umbrella Reimagined)

October 24, 2014
3d-innovations.com

Fall is in full swing and winter is just around the corner. Many of us will be pulling out our umbrellas to fend of the rain and snow in the upcoming months. We have all struggled with frustrating umbrella issues and know that they can be a pain at times due to the complex wire frame and material that easily rips. The Sa is reimaging the traditional umbrella and aiming to make umbrella complications a thing of the past.

saSa “does away with the traditional skeleton and mesh umbrella structure, for a much more modern and efficient design. Beyond it’s completely new canopy design, the Sa also innovates with its environmentally conscious material choices, has a completely innovative internalized handle mechanism and magnetic closure system.” The traditional umbrella design has been past due for an updated design and it seems as though these two product designers have done just that and in a very innovative manner.

“Like origami, The Sa uses planar tension to generate its form. The inner and outer canopies expand and contract in unison to open and close the umbrella. This new design allows the umbrella to be lighter, since it does not need the added weight of an inner metal skeleton. Also, since there are no exposed, moving components, the umbrella is stronger and will last longer. Furthermore, since the material is flexible when not in tension, it can easily bounce back into shape, even when exposed to high winds.”

Learn more about the Sa on Kickstarter! You can also follow the parent company Nooka on Facebook and Twitter.

Product of the Week: Notion

October 10, 2014
3d-innovations.com

“Notion is a home intelligence system that uses a small, smart, multi-function sensor to detect unbelievable things.”

We decided to feature Notion as our “Product of the Week” because this product is working hard to make home intelligence accessible and affordable for everyone. The design of this home intelligence system is unparalleled; and the manner in which the company has kept the outward appearance of the entire system discrete and unobtrusive really helps it stand out from the crowd. The Notion system covers all of the basics of home security but the ability to monitor other aspects of your home as well really differentiates this system. With Notion you are able to monitor doors, windows but also the propane tank for your grill, the temperature of your refrigerator, different sound frequencies and so much more.

notion

“With Notion, you can know things like when your child returns from school, the second there is a water leak, if a gun safe has been accessed and much more. In fact, this is exactly why we built Notion; to allow you to monitor what you want in a way that makes sense for you and your family.”

Learn more about Notion on Kickstarter or the official website. You can also follow the company and its progress on Facebook and Twitter.

Product of the Week: AquaSprouts Garden

October 3, 2014
3d-innovations.com

Many of us today are urban dwellers, and though we love to be surrounded by the sights and sounds of the city, it does not allow us to have flourishing gardens and the chance to fully embrace an organic lifestyle that you would find outside of the city. The AquaSprouts Garden is a project we came across on Kickstarter that brings a garden indoors in an educational and stylish way. Whether you want to embrace gardening for the health benefits, family bonding or just a way to learn something new this gardening system is great for any home.

“The AquaSprouts Garden stylishly combines your aquarium and garden into a sustainable, desktop ecosystem.”

garden

How it Works: “Both practical and appealing, the AquaSprouts Garden is a unique product that uses aquaponic technology in a simple, compact design. Aquaponics is a closed-loop system in which fish and plants work together to create a sustainable ecosystem. When the fish are fed, they create waste that is pumped into the AquaSprouts grow-bed. Naturally occurring bacteria then break down the waste and saturate the grow-bed with nutrients— producing strong, healthy plants all while cleaning the water for the fish.”

Learn more about the AquaSprouts Garden on Kickstarter and the official website. You can also follow them and their Kickstarter progress on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
