Product of the Week: StemBox

It is well-known that there is a major gap in our STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education pipeline and that nearly 40% of companies report difficulty in filling positions because of a lack of STEM skills*. With the ever increasing demand for STEM skills, it is imperative that we spark a love of STEM education in our students early-on. Fostering interest in STEM related subjects at an early age encourages students to explore these types of careers as they progress through school. The best and most effective way of getting our students interested in STEM is through real world, hands-on learning.

stemboxThis week we are featuring StemBox, “a subscription box that makes real science accessible to young girls and empowers them as young scientists”. StemBox sends out boxes full of all the necessary equipment to conduct real-world science experiments. “Each box contains sophisticated labware and reagents for the science experiment, a protocol, fun science accessories, and a link to our corresponding videos. Our educational videos feature in-depth explanation from a real female role model working in that box’s field.” On the StemBox Kickstarter page you can view their “Strawberry DNA Extraction Box” and the “Owl Pellet Dissection Box”, both of these boxes encourage young girls to get out and explore the world around them. We also see that there is a future engineering kit in the works!

It has been proven that students learn more and retain information when they are able to participate in activities. Having these StemBoxes tailor-made for age level and interests is a fantastic way to make subjects come alive for students.

2015 Hawaii STEM Conference: CAD Competition

stemconfThe 6th Annual Hawaii STEM Conference concluded this past weekend and we had the honor of being part of it once again. This year 3D Innovations held a CAD competition that was focused on having teams develop a design solution based on an existing problem presented to them. The challenge was to design a custom bike light that will easily mount to the handle bars on a child size bike. The students utilized Solidworks to produce their digital designs. The challenging part for the teams involved taking the requirements they were given and simultaneously addressing all of the design specifications.

Once the students had completed the task, they then presented their design outcome, photo renderings, anticipated material costs and packaging designs/options to a panel of expert judges. Maui High School presented an outstanding design solution and came in first place! This team was cohesive and had great communication which helped them take the lead. It was great to see that all of the student participants in the competition showed determination and strong problem solving skills.

We would be remiss without mentioning the keynote speaker at the conference, Titan Gilroy of Titan America Manufacturing. Titan grew up in Hawaii and fought an uphill battle for a good portion of his life and has come out on top. He is the proud owner of a CNC machining company and a major proponent of american manufacturing. His story really resonated with the audience and his charisma was inspiring. Product of the Week: mDrawBot

This 4-in-1 robotics kit would be a great project for a robotics class or a weekend project at home. mDrawBot is a 4-in-1 drawing robot kit, that can be assembled into 4 different configuration drawing robots: mScara, mSpider, mEggBot and mCar. All four of these robots can draw on different surfaces and the best part is that build time is about an hour. This is one of those kits that can really spark a love for engineering in children because of its interactive nature.

  • mScara is a SCARA (Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arm) driven by stepper motors. If you install a pen on mScara, it can draw pictures on a flat surface. Replacing the pen with a laser diode, it can turn into a desktop laser engraver.
  • mSpider is a drawing robot which can draw pictures on a wall or a white board.
  • Just in time for Easter, the mEggBot is designed to draw on things that are improbable to print on, such as eggs. It can be used to write letters or to draw expressions on eggs.
  • mCar is a three-wheel robot car. It contains two stepper motor drive wheels and a ball caster wheel. It can draw its own movement tracks on the surface. If you install a chalk instead of a pen, it can draw on the floor.

Product of the Week: Coordimate

Here at 3D Innovations we are big proponents of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. We understand the importance of STEM subjects and the need to encourage more students to enter STEM fields after college. On Kickstarter we recently came across a product, Coordimate, that will take some of the “grunt work” out of math, economics and engineering classes. This ingenious product quickly and accurate prints out a Cartesian graph so you can spend more time solving the problem and less time worrying about the design of your graph. We all know how critical accuracy can be when solving math equations and the Coordimate would be a great companion to have to ensure the most accurate answer. This product would be fantastic for middle school students and all the way up to graduate students.

coordimate“I wanted to create a tool that could produce a Cartesian graph with the push of a button, as an alternative to redrawing it over and over again.” Five prototypes later and the Coordimate is now ready for production.

Product of the Week: MeArm

We always have our eye out for activities that make STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education fun and accessible. On Kickstarter we came across MeArm, a pock sized industrial robot arm, that is built and programmed by the user. The developers have made this kit simple enough to be put together with a screwdriver but with its open source design files you can also move into more advanced levels of robotics. This is a terrific way to introduce children to engineering and robotics!

MmearmeArm would be a fantastic product to introduce robotics in a home or school setting. “Apart from being something that’s small, cool and attractive the MeArm is a miniature version of an industrial robot arm. So while it’s simple enough to build and use with a child on a rainy Sunday afternoon – it can also be used at more advanced levels of education to teach real robotics.”

Halloween STEM Projects

halloweenMany of us have children that are beyond excited to dress up tomorrow in their Halloween costume and head door-to-door for some candy treats. Instead of letting them devour all of that candy, you can now help them turn some of it into a fun learning opportunity.

This Buzzfeed article, 19 Spooky STEM Projects For Kiddos This Halloween, has wonderful suggestions on how to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math into Halloween. These projects are not only creative and educational but they would be great to do at home or even as a classroom lesson.

As an engineering firm we understand the importance of teaching children the fundamentals early in order to pique their interest during formative years. BlocksCAD gives elementary school students the ability to dream up an object, model it and then print it on a 3D printer… Making the product design process fun and interactive!

Recent graduates with STEM education backgrounds have found themselves in a better than average job market. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual mean wage for a STEM job is $79,395 — nearly 71% higher than the national annual average wage across all occupations and industries. Over the past couple of decades, some cities in the U.S. have become more attractive to STEM graduates for a variety of reasons.

2014 Hawaii STEM Conference Event Summary

Our President and Chief 3D Printing Officer, Collin Kobayashi, was a participant at the Hawaii STEM Conference over the past weekend and below is his summary from the event…

Hawaii STEM Conference“The 2014 STEMWorks Conference included over 300 students from 15+ schools across the state.  With breakout sessions from 3D Design to Game Design, students were exposed to many industry technologies and got opportunities to learn about them from experts.  The conference also included onsite design competitions which included Digital Media, Game Design, 3D Design (Product Design) and Video Design.  Students were given tasks for each competition and were required to produce content according to the specifications given.

Guest speakers included a mapping expert from National Geographic, Economic Development leader, and former technology student turned entrepreneur.  They shared their knowledge and expertise, providing insight on the importance of technology and the various applications available.

All in all, it was another great event that showcased the STEM projects and activities going on in the state and collaborative effort in providing opportunities to our future workforce.”
