STEM education benefits entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship Needs STEM Education

STEM education benefits entrepreneurship. There has been a lot of talk recently about STEM education—both at the industry level and the government level. Companies are now working with schools to provide technology collaboration to help prepare students for 21st century jobs. While the focus is on educating students around the four subjects—science, technology, engineering and math—the true value of these subject areas goes far beyond an engineering career or science major. STEM education provides a solid foundation for entrepreneurship.

“It’s clear that curiosity, creativity and innovation lead to a deeper exploration of entrepreneurship.” (Entrepreneur)

Critical Thinking—Ask Why

Testing a hypothesis is a major part of STEM education. A reoccurring question at every stage of a science experiment or design challenge is, “Why?”

  • Why did this reaction happen?
  • Why was our original hypothesis incorrect?
  • Why is this design performing poorly during a stress test?

Answering the simple “why” question gets students thinking about possibilities. It is amazing how one word can take a student beyond a traditional way of thinking and get them exploring alternatives.

Entrepreneurs face this same question everyday as well and are required to think out-of-the-box. Critical thinking skills are key—and one might even say, mandatory—when it comes to starting a business.

Design a Solution

Whether you are an entrepreneur designing the latest tech gadget or a new restaurant concept—innovative solutions drive your business. Problem solving skills are the very foundation of STEM education and teaching this valuable life skill translates both to college and beyond—no matter the career field entered. Having the ability to stop, assess, analyze, hypothesize and solve a problem is a skill every individual needs at every age level.

Share your Invention

When we have the correct answer to a problem, we want to share it. It doesn’t matter if we are the first to figure out a challenging math equation or the first to design the iPod, we have an answer to a problem and want to share it.

A quick glance inside of a STEM focused classroom will show a range of design possibilities to the same question posed by the teacher. Students love to think critically and use their creativity—much like entrepreneurs. Getting hands-on and designing a solution is what entrepreneurs do best.

STEM education is more than four subjects, it’s a mindset. The skills taught in STEM classes can be used in any career field—especially, entrepreneurship.

3D Academy is reimaging STEM education.

The Changing Landscape of STEM Education

3D Academy is reimaging STEM education.Within the last five to ten years there has been a visible shift in the way teachers approach, introduce and incorporate STEM education into their classrooms. Technological advancements coupled with vocal industry proponents, have successfully transformed the way STEM education is taught. This is great news, because the long-term benefits of STEM education are profound on students’ future career success—whether in a STEM field, or not.

Reimaging STEM Education

Where once lectures and standardized tests were the main ways to teach and test STEM knowledge, today’s teachers understand that there are better, more hands-on methods, of educating students around STEM subjects.

3D Printing

For instance, 3D printing technology has revolutionized classrooms, schools and makerspaces around the world. 3D printing makes learning fun and engaging. Students can now move away from books and lectures and actually design and print the subject they are learning about. Learning about ancient Egypt? Design and print a model of a mummy.

3D Modeling

Let’s take a quick step back, and before you even get to the 3D printing phase, a CAD model must be designed. This is just another way in which students get to test ideas, theories and use their critical thinking skills. Here at 3D Academy, we have seen a real shift and educators are more interested than ever in introducing students to 3D modeling programs because they understand the long-term benefits of this skill set.

Drones

Drones are taking off, literally and figuratively, in the classroom. This is another area that draws awe from students and they have proved a great way to provide hands-on learning. Whether students are working together to design an actual drone, a replacement part for one or understanding the ways in which this technology can be used in different industries—it has successfully captured the attention and imagination of students.

“Engineers will address the complex societal challenges of the 21st century by building a new generation of machines, materials, and systems. We should fundamentally rethink how we educate engineers for this future,” says Ed Crawley, the Ford Professor of Engineering in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT.

STEM Education Teaches Life Skills
Teamwork and Collaboration

Working as part of a team starts from a young age and continues on into the workplace. Learning how to collaborate and work together is a necessity. Teamwork helps students learn about different perspectives, respecting other ideas and coming up with a solution together.

Problem Solving Skills

Hands-on lessons for STEM subjects often revolve around solving real world problems. Students must assess a situation and develop a solution. Problem solving skills are immensely beneficial both inside and outside of the classroom. Having the ability to stop, assess, analyze, hypothesize and solve a problem is a skill every individual needs at every age level.

Innovative Thinking

We are all aware of the benefits of “thinking outside the box”, however, this does not always come naturally. Learning to ask questions and develop diverse solutions helps to instill an inquisitive mindset.

The way STEM education is being taught has fundamentally shifted and this change will no doubt have a major impact on our future generation of STEM professionals and business leaders.

3D Academy will be an exhibitor at RobotX STEM Expo 2018

3D Academy: RobotX STEM Expo Exhibitor (Dec. 11-12, 2018)

3D Academy, 3D Innovations, RobotX STEM Expo, HawaiiOur 3D Academy will be an exhibitor at the upcoming RobotX STEM Expo. Our team will have a booth at the event and will be conducting a hands-on session demonstrating the VPerch program as well as discussing the ways in which 3D printing technology can be implemented into the classroom.

What is VPerch?

In partnership with HI FusionEd, Office of Naval Research (ONR), and Navatek, VPerch was created to provide students with the opportunity to learn about various STEM applications as they relate to underwater robotics.

The emphasis of VPerch is to introduce students to the engineering design process through the virtual design (3D CAD) process where they can design and simulate (virtually test) their UROV design and analyze the results before building the physical system. Using the virtual design and simulation process, students see first-hand how their design will perform under certain conditions. Once their virtual design is completed and have enough confidence that it will perform as designed, they migrate to the build phase where they can build their ROV based on their virtual design specifications. We look forward to talking more about the VPerch program and demonstrating it at the RobotX STEM Expo.

The Benefits of Using 3D Printing Technology in Education

3D printing, 3D printing technology, education, 3D Innovations' STEM Program helps educators to assist students in learning to utilize real world engineering applications. The new school year is underway and social media is buzzing with fantastic projects that teachers have created to get their students involved as active learners—one big way involves 3D printing. As the cost of 3D printers has dropped significantly in recent years, more schools are able to adopt and incorporate the technology into the curriculum.

Our 3D Academy has seen first hand the benefits of introducing 3D printing technology to students early-on. Below are four benefits of introducing 3D printing technology in education.

Hands-On Learning

3D printing makes learning fun and engaging. Students are able to move away from books and lectures and actually design and print the subject they are learning about. Learning about ancient Egypt? Design and print a model of a mummy. Learning about landforms? Design and print a mountain range. When the possibilities are endless, creativity can flourish.

While CAD programs can get complicated, there are specific programs available for educational purposes. This means students will be able to design on their own and see their exact design get transformed into an actual object.

Creating Inventors

Kids love to create. Whether it’s with LEGOs, blocks, sticks or anything else they can get their hands-on, kids are always creating. Instead of buying someone else’s creation, kids can identify a problem and create their own solution. Giving students the power to design and build with cutting-edge technology gets their minds thinking about the things they can create.

Real World Problem Solving

3D printing is a technology that businesses, engineers and scientists are using everyday to change the world. Put that same technology into the hands of students and introduce them to some of the challenges facing the community. Through this problem-solving approach, students will learn empathy, teamwork, and critical thinking skills as they work to develop a solution to a real-world problem.

Engaging Students

3D printing has a ‘wow factor’ with students since it is not something they see every day. It motivates and engages students to learn. Students who may otherwise not be actively engaged in the classroom, suddenly light up and want to participate when 3D printing is involved.

3D printing technology promotes active learning and has the power to open a world of career possibilities to students. 3D printing inspires creativity and can help encourage students to explore a career in engineering or science.

STEM Education: Keeping Your Child Engaged During Summer Break

stem, stem education, students, stem enrichment campSummer is the perfect time to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subject areas.

Summer break is here, and many parents are trying to find ways to keep their child engaged and learning while outside of the classroom. We understand the importance of nurturing your child’s inquisitive mind while fostering a growth mindset during these valuable summer months.

It turns out that summer is a perfect time to introduce your child to the fun side of STEM subjects. In the summer months, students have more time to focus on what really interests them. They can dig deeper into subject matter, which helps them not only grasp concepts better, but gives them a better understanding of the world around them.

Below are a few suggestions of how you can keep your child engaged in STEM subject areas throughout the summer.

Build Together

Even the youngest family member can get in on this activity. Pull out the wooden blocks, Legos, Tinker Toys and anything else that lets you design, create and build. While it might seem that you are “just playing”, what you are in fact doing is creating and showing your child that they can create anything their mind envisions. After all, play is the work of childhood. Building together lets children practice their fine motor skills while thinking like an engineer.

Introduce a Design Program

Children love to create. There are so many design programs out there for different age groups that you are bound to find something that will grab your child’s attention. Even if you, yourself are not an engineer or familiar with design, we still encourage you to do this. You are showing your child that you are never too old to learn something new.

Enroll in a STEM Enrichment Camp

A STEM focused summer camp will give your student a structured, hands-on approach learning. Your child will be surrounded by peers with similar interests to their own and teachers that want to foster their love of learning STEM subjects.

Our 3D Academy hosts and participates in many STEM Enrichment Camps throughout the year. Head on over to our 3D Academy calendar to view our upcoming camps.

Get Outside

Head outdoors and into nature. The National Parks Service hosts Junior Ranger programs at all of their parks, which encourages students to explore, learn and protect. The Junior Ranger program provides activities and educational booklets to help your child learn about what they see within the park.

If you don’t live near a National Park, try going for a hike or taking a walk around your city to view the engineering marvels that surround us every day.

Monthly STEM Education Subscription Boxes

Subscription boxes are a fun and easy way to foster your child’s love of learning. With the rise in popularity of subscription boxes, there are now quite a few focused on various STEM subject areas now. These boxes arrive monthly and contain activities for you and your child to do together. One month you might be engineering a mechanical claw and the next you are building the solar system together. These boxes provide a great opportunity for hands-on learning.

STEM education teaches valuable life skills that carry over into all aspects of daily life. This summer, keep your child learning and engaged with some fun hands-on activities.

The Long-Term Benefits of a STEM Education

stem education, stem, stem summer camps, 3d academyTechnology is transforming the landscape of our lives—in today’s global marketplace there is no substitute for a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) background as you enter the workforce. “STEM workers tend to earn 26% more than non-STEM workers and yearly growth for STEM workers is projected to be almost double that of non-STEM workers.” (Florida State University) Industry is shifting and to help our students keep up with the demand, a STEM education is imperative.

As a nation, our education industry has recognized that our students are not receiving the best hands-on, STEM-focused, education possible for a myriad of reasons. This means that our students are falling behind in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math subjects, and that they are missing out on other valuable lessons as well. Below are some of the areas in which STEM helps students thrive.

STEM Education Teaches Valuable Life Skills

Problem Solving Skills

Hands-on lessons for STEM subjects often revolve around solving real world problems. Students are required to assess a situation and develop a solution.

Teamwork and Collaboration

Working as part of a team starts from a young age and continues on into the workplace. Learning how to collaborate and work together is a necessity. Teamwork helps students learn about different perspectives, respecting other ideas and coming up with a solution together.

Organization Skills

Scientific linear methodology requires organization—there is a set manner in which to approach a problem. All STEM subject areas require a step 1, step 2, step 3 and so on; you can’t solve a math equation by skipping steps. Students learn the importance of being organized and why it is important to their everyday lives as well.

STEM education can be taught through lectures; however, it has been proven time and again that hands-on learning is the best method for teaching and instilling these concepts. Giving students an opportunity to use technology, use their hands, ask questions and see concepts in action sparks excitement in them as well as a desire to learn more.

STEM Enrichment Camps

This summer our 3D Academy is offering two STEM Enrichment Camps, “3D Design and Drone Building” and “3D Printed Rocket Building”. Students will learn the fundamentals of 3D Design, 3D Printing, CAD Design and Spatial Environments and be able to build their own Drone/custom Co2 mini rocket while learning about the various principles that integrate with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students will be introduced to the world of 3D Printing, CAD Design, Engineering, Electronics, and prototyping all while being in an immersive STEM learning environment. Learn more about both camps and easily register, over on our website: 3D Academy STEM Enrichment Camps.

Hawaii STEM Conference 2018 (Part 2)

Hawaii STEM Conference 2018We had a great time connecting with students at the 2018 Hawaii STEM Conference earlier this month. At this year’s conference, our main area of participation was hosting an onsite ‘Product Design & Pitch’ competition, where students were given a challenge that they had to complete within 24 hours. (Read more about the challenge here.) As always, the students impressed us with their creativity and ability to turn an idea into a marketable product.

After the competition we caught up with a few of the students to get feedback about their competition experience. See what these fantastic STEM students had to say:

“The product design and pitch competition was a fun and beneficial competition that allowed me to cooperate with others, especially with the amount of work we had to put within a day. It allowed me to gain knowledge on CAD and designing because I had to create a detailed product within a few hours. This Hawaii STEM Conference competition will help me in designing other products or concepts in the field of engineering.”

…..

“I wanted to enter the Product Design and Pitch Competition because of my past experiences in problem solving and designing through competitions and assignments in my STEM classes at school. I am familiar with the process of product design competitions; and joining this pitch competition was another opportunity to apply my problem solving and critical thinking skills.”

…..

“Taking Engineering Tech 1 really helped with completing the competition, since we learned how to use the applications required to do the competition such as using Autodesk Inventor and things as simple as how do I present my idea/design to a panel of judges.”

Receiving this kind of feedback is exactly why we like to connect with students early-on to help bridge the gap between academia and industry. Hands-on learning really engages students and brings abstract STEM concepts to life.

(View photos from the competition over on our Facebook page.)
