Hawaii STEM Conference (April 19 & 20, 2013)

It is time again for the Hawaii STEM Conference! This year marks the 4th successful year
of the Hawaii STEM conference. STEM/Service Learning students, teachers, parents, community and business leaders are invited to gather on Maui to celebrate STEM learning projects, experience the excitement of a regional technology conference and share stories with other students from different islands. A primary goal of this STEM event is to challenge and encourage as much participation from students as possible.

This year there will be competitions in the following areas:

  1. CAD Application Showcase
  2. Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  3. Video
  4. Music
  5. Poster Competition (Download STEMWORKS logo to be used in the poster competition)
  6. Web Design
  7. Game Design
  8. SketchUp Urban Design Competition

Breakout Sessions
Approximately 200 facilitators and students will have the opportunity to attend hands-on and presentation-style training breakout sessions during the Hawaii STEM Conference.

There are a lot of great breakout sessions but the two we are most excited for are the Pre-Engineering sessions:

  1. Pre-Engineering In 3D – Beginners — CAD Discover Pre-Engineering and Design methods using 3D CAD. This hands-on session demonstrates how 3D Technology makes engineering & design interactive, transforming ideas into prototypes and products.
  2. Pre-Engineering In 3D – Advanced — CAD Must have 2 years experience with CAD programming. This hands-on session offers students a more comprehensive dive into 3D technology with more advanced engineering & design interactive challenges.

Makerspace Labs For Education

Makerspace Labs have been popping up in schools all over the U.S. which help to promote STEM Education and advanced technology programs. Most labs are outfitted with small machinery, soldering equipment, and 3D Printers. Utilizing these types of equipment, students can get a real sense of industry practices and learn about what engineers do and see the types of tools that they use in their daily jobs.

This integration of industry practices with the educational system assist in the development and retainment of students who become involved with STEM programs. These labs are typically an extension of other STEM programs and are designed to complement these other types of programs. While this type of environment is created to support design/build activities, other subject areas such as science, math, art, and even history are being integrated as part of advanced learning opportunities and provide students with other methods of learning.

Student Training Courses: 3D Academy is committed to furthering the integration of 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) technology at all levels of engineering instruction. The goal of the Student Training Courses is to introduce and maintain the power of 3D modeling technology to students in the classroom, to support the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and Robotics programs.

Teacher Training Courses: Integrate 3D CAD into Math/Science/Art classes through hands on project based learning activities.

Professional Development: Teachers can obtain Professional Development (PD) credits for courses taken. Advance your professional goals by taking approved courses through the PDE3 credit system.

Web Based Training Courses: In addition to onsite training courses, we also provide web based training modules to learn at your own pace.

Design Thinking Hawaii Boot Camp Concludes

Collin Kobayashi of 3D Innovations returned as a mentoring coach for the second annual Design Thinking Hawaii Boot Camp to assist with creating a new generation of Design Thinking coaches. Below is a summary he provided of the workshop experience:

“Design Thinking Boot Camp introduces a powerful and innovative approach to problem solving using a human centered design approach. Developed by Stanford University Design School, these methods allow you to gain multiple perspectives on complex challenges and promotes collaborative team work.

As the second annual Design Thinking Hawaii Boot Camp came to a close, new and returning coaches succeeded in teaching participants a new way of thinking using the Design Thinking process.

Using the Empathy mode, participants were able to observe, engage and immerse themselves with users to better understand their needs.

Throughout the Define mode, participants were able to “unpack” and synthesize empathy
findings into compelling needs and insights and were able to develop problem statements into ‘Point of Views’ that focuses on specific users, needs, and insights discovered through the empathy process.

During the Ideate phase, the focus transitioned from identifying problems into exploring possible solutions that meets the needs of users. This phase was probably the most creative mode where the intent was to develop a large quantity of ideas and allowed users to step beyond identifying obvious solutions.

Creativity continued into the Prototype mode where prototypes were developed based on ideas in the Ideate mode. “Low resolution” prototypes were built using everyday items such as Post-it notes, pens, paper, glue, sticks, and a whole lot more! These prototypes were built in a short period of time (30 minutes or less) and are designed for people to interact and experience with them. The intent was for the participants to learn quickly, investigate multiple possibilities and to better connect with the users experience.

The Testing phase was the most interactive where participants tested out their prototypes on other users. Comments and feedback were obtained to refine solutions and make them better. Participants gained a deeper understanding of users needs and were able to discover if the prototype was the correct solution or not.

It was obvious that the mindset of participants had shifted from solution seeking to understanding the deeper connection of users to products/services. Next steps are to implement at each coaches organizations and community integration.”

We have been very busy here at 3D innovations! The past few months have been exciting and blissfully busy…Two highlights for us include: participating as a DT Coach in the first annual Design Thinking Hawaii workshop and we helped Sachi Kitchenware develop an idea into a stylish and functional product.

First things first…you might be asking yourself, “What is the Design Thinking Hawaii workshop?” Well we have an answer, the Design Thinking Hawaii workshop introduces a powerful and innovative approach to problem solving. Developed by Stanford University Design School, these methods allow you to gain multiple perspectives of complex challenges and promotes collaborative team work. This was a wonderful opportunity for 3D Innovations’ management to immerse themselves into problem solving strategies and practicing viewing problems and solutions in other ways. We would now like to take a moment to thank Mark Nobori, owner of Sachi Kitchenware, for choosing 3D Innovations as their partner to develop the Pupu Cooler. This project was exciting, challenging and very rewarding.

This re-freezable cooler is insulated with polyurethane foam and is filled with a safe and non-toxic ice substitute gel to maintain a consistent and even temperature throughout your foods. It can stay cold for up to 10 hours indoors and 5 hours outdoors! Lid and serving utensil holders were designed into the cooler to make serving hassle free and well organized. Now for all you outdoor lovers out there, can’t you just picture yourself spending a day at the beach with your family and not having to worry about keeping your food cold? Amazing.

3D Innovations successfully helped Sachi Kitchenware take their product from a concept to the manufacturing phase. We cannot wait to see what challenges Sachi Kitchenware will have for us next.
