Overcoming Doubt & Naysayers When Launching Your Startup

1lightbulbStarting a business is hard. Beyond the long hours and sacrifices, many entrepreneurs have to overcome the nagging feeling of self-doubt. You question everything… Is this startup worth it? Will it be successful? Should I have a backup plan? What am I doing? It is particularly hard when you are in the very early stages and share your great product idea with a trusted friend, and instead of words of encouragement, they say “Get real”. Those two little words sting, and they open the flood gates of self-doubt. However, there are ways to overcome self-doubt and the naysayers.

  • Naysayers: To the person that says your idea is too outrageous or impossible… Remind yourself that everyone is entitled to an opinion. There is no real use trying to debate your idea with them because the “what-ifs” will only make you doubt yourself and your shiny idea will start to tarnish. Politely thank them for their time and move on.
  • Self-Doubt: Trust us when we say that you are not the only person to doubt your own business idea. Entrepreneurs have dealt with this since the beginning of time. In reality, stepping out of your comfort zone, in any area of your life, leads to doubt. Combat self-doubt with assurance that you have done your research and know that this is a viable idea. You have researched the market, the competition and business landscape… You are prepared and ready for the journey ahead.
  • Always challenge the “better-safe-than-sorry” concept. Why is it better to be safe? What happens when you are sorry for a screw-up? You learn from it? Failure is not something to shy away from. As Thomas A. Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work”. You can’t learn and grow without some type of failure. Failure is what makes you stronger and wiser.

Life is a journey full of twists and turns. Don’t be afraid to get out there and make your business idea a reality.
