Can we really use 3D printing to ‘harvest’ asteroids in space?

Every once in a while we see a 3D printing news story that makes us stop and scratch our heads…this is one of them, Mining Company Will Use 3D Printer To Turn Raw Asteroids Into Valuable Metal Parts. Right now this concept is challenging to grasp because of the mere fact that 3D printers are still evolving here on earth, and sending one to an asteroid to harvest platinum group metals…well it sounds a little out of this world.

Deep Space Industries

We do admire the imagination, determination, and innovation of Deep Space Industries and would love to see the company successfully complete the project by 2020. We do however have our reservations about the feasibility of this plan.

What do you think, does this project sound a little more sci-fi than real life?
