The University of Hawaii at Manoa is conducting a Shape Up! Kids research study funded by the National Institute of Health and is actively looking for study participants. This study is relevant to the part of NIH’s mission which focuses on the prevention of disease by supporting research in the diagnosis of human diseases.
The purpose of the Shape Up! Kids study is to explore and develop ways to measure health and body composition from 2D and 3D images. These new technologies are developed to use shape information on the outside to predict measures of health on the inside, such as body fat percentage and lean muscle mass, which can then provide useful and detailed information about various health and wellness risks. Participants provide the data needed for researchers to continue this study, which will create the largest and most powerful description of body shape and its association and relation to body composition, metabolic markers, function, and dietary intake.

The “Shape Up! Kids” study is a nationwide body composition research study funded by the National Institutes of Health. The long-term goal of the Shape Up! Study is to provide descriptors of health using 3D body shape, create tools to visualize and quantify body shape in research, clinical practice, and personal health assessment.
The one time visit usually lasts about 3 hours and we complete the following measurements:
3D and 2D images, whole body Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan, whole body MRI (Kids only) scan, blood draw, strength assessment, and health questionnaire.
Eligible volunteers that complete the study would be able to receive:
- Body Composition Results: The DXA scan report will estimate body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, and bone density.
- Blood Results: Complete Blood Count
- 3D Optical Image: 3D whole body image with body circumferences and personalized avatar
- MRI: USB containing whole body MRI scan
- Gift card: $100 for each participant and $100 for parents/guardians
