Becoming Our Featured ‘Product of the Week’

November 4, 2015
3D Innovations

Here at 3D Innovations we love finding and sharing new (and awesome) products. In fact, we love it so much that each week we feature one of these products in our weekly Product of the Week blog post. We have featured a range of technology related products, everything from Skybuds wireless earbuds to the BumBee Seat. So far we have featured over seventy different Kickstarter products in our weekly posts and assisted many of those in reaching their funding goals.

Products featured in our weekly post not only get a write-up on our company blog, but we also share the product on all of our social media channels. That means the product is getting in front quite a few eyes and potential backers. We are true believers in the power of crowdfunding, and want to do our part in helping get these innovative products to market.

We are always on the hunt for products to feature! If you would like us to feature your product or you have come across one that you would like to share with us, please e-mail a short description and link to the crowdfunding website  info@3d-innovations.com. No campaign or product is too big or small!

Product Design Collaboration Leads to Crowdfunding Success

August 31, 2015
3D Innovations

2.pjacksonCrowdfunding has fundamentally changed the way we develop and launch products. Individuals now have the power to obtain funding and commercialize an idea in less time. However, like any endeavor, unexpected challenges arise and it is necessary to be prepared.

From our experience, having a Product Design firm involved with the design process earlier in the campaign, or if possible, prior to launching will help crowdfunding companies establish themselves and their products. Entrepreneurs do not want to find themselves in the position of raising the necessary capital through crowdfunding, but then having no idea where to actually begin. A Product Design firm can negate this and make sure you are adequately prepared for what lies ahead.

What to expect… An engineering partner will properly test and validate the design, evaluate the sustainability of the design and make sure the product can be successfully manufactured. Also, they will be able to assist with not only developing the idea, but developing an entire project plan, from design to prototyping and manufacturing. From there, the Product Design firm can assist with additional design factors that make assembly and packaging more efficient — resulting in cost savings. It all boils down to showing the crowdfunding community that you are prepared and committed to the successful launch of your product.

Below are three additional reasons to choose an engineering partner for your next crowdfunding campaign…

Proper Product Development Procedures

There needs to be a synergistic approach to the product development process, allowing the entrepreneur to provide feedback while the engineering partner ensures that the design meets manufacturing requirements. Engineers will be able to develop and update the product design models and provide prototypes reflecting design changes for testing and validation purposes.

Managing Supply Chains

Managing supply chains is a critical factor. A lot of crowdfunding companies who have raised capital and need to move into the manufacturing process are not aware of the many pitfalls that can arise, and experience delays in fulfilling their orders because they lack the knowledge and experience in working with manufacturers — who are often overseas. Many entrepreneurs often rely on the first (and only) manufacturer that they meet, and fail to fully evaluate other manufacturing companies. A Product Design firm has the knowledge and experience to connect you with reputable supply chain partners.

Increased Focus on Core Activities

With an engineering team focusing on the design and development of the product, more focus can be given to other areas of the business. The current team can concentrate on marketing, business development and all other areas necessary to build a successful business brand.

Collaboration with a Product Design firm can help you successfully develop and commercialize your next great product idea.

Functional Prototypes are Critical for Success

July 23, 2015
3D Innovations

The ability to effectively communicate your idea with a functional prototype is one of the many benefits of prototyping. Whether your goal is to find investors or patent your idea, a prototype shows that you have tested your design, finalized your product and are ready for the next step.

Still asking yourself, “Should I prototype my idea?” consider the following factors…

3D Printing Services | Rapid Prototyping Services | 3D-innovationsTest the Design & Finalize the Product

3D modeling is a great tool for conceptualizing and structuring your idea, but there is no substitute for a functional prototype. A prototype allows you to fully test the design, try out different materials, and really dive in to figure out what works and what doesn’t. Before you head out to launch your product or obtain funding you want to be sure that your product is feasible and can be successfully manufactured.

Gaining Investors

Whether you are preparing a professional presentation for angel investors or planning to launch a crowdfunding campaign, a prototype is necessary. Investors want to see that you have vetted the design and have worked out all of the “kinks”. To gain the trust of investors you want to present your product in the most comprehensive way possible. While a presentation is good, a functional prototype makes you stand out in the crowd and shows that you are committed to the successful launch of your product. Additionally, crowdfunding campaigns rely heavily on descriptive videos and nothing is more descriptive than showing the complete functionality and capabilities of your product.

Team Collaboration

Illustrating an idea with words alone can be a challenge for even the most descriptive orator. 3D CAD designs help clarify aspects of the product for team members, but a prototype brings the idea to life. When team members get to feel the product and test it themselves it is no longer an obscure idea but a tangible one that they can work with.

Patent Application

For many inventors the thought of a patent application can be daunting. While a prototype is not required for a patent application it is highly encouraged by many patent attorneys. With a prototype you can clearly demonstrate the patentable features of the design and describe in detail each component of your product.

The prototyping process should not be overlooked or underestimated. This step in the product development timeline is a critical factor for future success.

Product of the Week: The MoonRay Desktop 3D Printer

June 3, 2015
3D Innovations

Crowdfunding websites have become a mecca for 3D printing technology. While most of the 3D printers we see have a single feature that makes them standout from the competition it is a rarity to find a 3D printer that is efficient, versatile and compact. Our featured Product of the Week, MoonRay, meets all of these and more. The engineers behind the MoonRay Desktop 3D Printer set out to bridge the gap between quality and price, and from their Kickstarter page it looks like this has been successfully accomplished.

MoonRay“The desktop 3D printers on the market today fall into two groups: expensive and high resolution or less expensive but with sub-standard printing quality. We designed the MoonRay to bridge this gap and bring high-quality printing capabilities to an affordable desktop 3D printing unit.” The phenomenal printing quality of the MoonRay means that your finished product will be accurate and the ultra-fine details won’t be lost. We have seen this type of accuracy in large commercial sized 3D printers but never before in a compact desktop printer at this price point.

The overall design of the MoonRay is simple and intuitive. “The MoonRay has no moving parts that aren’t essential to the printing process. This simplicity allows the MoonRay to keep running smoothly over time.” To get started with MoonRay all your have to do is plug it in (seriously)! No assembly required means that you can start printing right away. The sleek outward appearance of MoonRay coupled with the internal technology makes this 3D printer truly one-of-a-kind.

Learn more about MoonRay on Kickstarter and the official website.

3D Printing Captures the Imagination

April 21, 2015
3D Innovations

Design_News_LOGOAdditive manufacturing (a/k/a 3D printing) has captured the attention of not only tech enthusiasts but almost every single industry out there. This technology is quickly expanding and moving beyond its initial prototyping function. “Although analyst predictions differ, all are in agreement that the 3D printing industry is growing and likely will continue to grow at a notable pace. Wohlers Report 2014, for example, puts the worldwide 3D printing industry at $3.07 billion in 2013 and anticipates that figure will reach $12.8 billion by 2018 and over $21 billion by 2020.” These are astonishing figures considering that just 10 years ago this technology was no where near this popular.

Another interesting way to analyze the 3D printing market is by looking at how wildly popular the technology is on crowdfunding websites, such as Kickstarter. Design News posted an article today, Top 10 3D Printing Projects, in which you garner a clear understanding of where the technology is and where it is going through Kickstarter statistics. “Without fail, the most popular of these projects are funded at seven or 10 times the amount the originator hoped to raise. Most received funding within a thirty day funding window and some were funded in minutes.” 3D printing is one of those technologies that piques your curiosity and captures your imagination.

Kick-start Your Crowdfunding Campaign

April 14, 2015
3D Innovations

All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them. ~Walt Disney

Concept 3D PrintingSo you have an idea that you believe it viable and would be a crowdfunding success but are unsure where to begin. At this stage in the game you probably have thousands of questions running through your mind. What would be my crowdfunding goal? How do I find a manufacturer? Is a prototype necessary? Where do I turn for packaging design?

While setting up your crowdfunding campaign is exhilarating, it is critical that you are well prepared. Below are points to consider as you are preparing to launch your campaign.

1. Don’t Underestimate Product Costs. One major issue facing new inventors is how easy it can be to underestimate the actual cost of bringing a product to market. Crowdfunding is typically an all or nothing funding approach, so depressing the funding goal is a common error. Without a proper funding target you are creating future issues and doing a major disservice to you and your investors. A way to combat this is by having a professional analyze your designs and provide you with an estimate on the actual manufacturing costs. This proactive approach not only helps with your campaign, but it also proves to investors that you are serious and well prepared.

2. Prototype. Your product should be prototyped. This stage lets you work out any design challenges and ensures that your product is in fact viable and able to be manufactured. It also helps define product costs, create marketing material, file a patent and gain customer feedback before manufacturing begins.

3. Details, Details, Details. Really put time and effort into the information you share with potential investors. Show them your initial development timeline and prototype changes. Explain how you have overcome certain challenges and how this has prepared you for the journey that is ahead.

4. Invest in Marketing. A video on our crowdfunding page is a must-have. You don’t need to invest in a big marketing firm but you do need a quality video and product images. Check around with friends and colleagues to see if they know someone that can help or reach out to freelance marketers for assistance.

5. Patent Protection. It is always a good idea to think about some form of intellectual property protection before placing your idea on a crowdfunding website. Most potential investors want you to succeed but there are those few that may want to steal your idea. Research patent protection through the USPTO and/or take some time to chat with a licensed patent attorney.

Crowdfunding Success

January 22, 2015
3D Innovations

The concept of crowdfunding is something that many are familiar with now and it’s hard to believe that this concept has only been around for roughly five years. The JOBS Act of 2012 really helped set the platform for crowdfunding to expand and that it has. “According to the Crowdfunding Industry Report by Massolution, in 2012 there was $2.7 Billion raised online via crowdfunding. In 2013 an estimated $5.1 Billion was crowdfunded online.” When entrepreneurs see these types of numbers and hear about wildly successful campaigns (such as the Coolest Cooler on Kickstarter, which raised $13M) it is no surprise that they are turning to crowdfunding for support.

goalWith so many crowdfunding platforms out there the landscape is packed and it is hard to know where to begin. We have put together the following list of crowdfunding websites sites, with brief descriptions on what types of projects they host, to help narrow your search to the community that is the best suit for your goals and needs.

  1. Kickstarter: “Bring your creative project to life” is the motto. This donation-based platform hosts creative projects ranging from art instillations to 3D printing technology. It is one of the earlier platforms and is very well-known. It has gained momentum in recent years with numerous product break-out campaigns raising wild amounts of funding.
  2. Indiegogo: This donation-based platform can help raise funds for a variety of projects. You will see things from consumer products to personal projects hosted here. With this kind of project variety and flexibility, Indiegogo has experienced more international growth than many of the other platforms.
  3. Quirky: If you’re an inventor, maker, or tinkerer then Quirky is a place to collaborate and crowdfund for donation-based funding with a community of other like-minded folks. Their site digs deeper into helping the process of bringing an invention or product to life, allowing community participation in the process.
  4. Go Fund Me: This donation-based platform is similar to Indiegogo in that there is quite a variety of projects on this site. Anything from personal goal projects to consumer product ideas can be found here.
  5. Crowdfunder: This is an investment-based platform, and has a one of the largest and fastest growing network of investors. This platform has quickly become the “Step #2” in crowdfunding for businesses — After successfully completing a donation-based funding campaign on Kickstarter or Indiegogo, companies are often turning to Crowdfunder to give the the crowd the opportunity to invest and raise more formal Seed & Series A rounds.
  6. AngelList: This is the place to go if you are looking for Silicon Valley momentum. Crowdfunding is relatively new for AngelList but the accredited investors and institutions on AngelList have been funding a growing number of top tech startups.
  7. CircleUp: This is a investment-based crowdfunding platform focuses on connecting accredited investors with innovative consumer and retail companies.

You will see in the brief descriptions above we mentioned either donation-based or investment-based. Donation or rewards based is the traditional type of crowdfunding platform in which you invest funds in return for a product if the campaign is successfully funded. Investment-based means that you are becoming a shareholder and are offered shares from the company in return for your investment.

We know there are hundreds of crowdfunding platforms out there, but we feel that these are the top places for entrepreneurs to get a product successfully funded and on its way to manufacturing and ultimately consumers.

We invite you to learn more about crowdfunding on the following websites:

Product of the Week: SharkStopper

September 12, 2014
3d-innovations.com

As a company that is located in Hawaii we have a special interest in ocean related products. We recently came across the SharkStopper on Kickstarter and were intrigued by the technology and the fact that this product uses a multi-patented design to repel sharks without harming them.

“SharkStopper was founded on the belief that people deserve the ability to be protected from sharks when enjoying the open waters – in the most humane, green and civilized way possible.”

shark_stopper

We found that technology behind the SharkStopper to be ingenious. “It is widely agreed in the scientific community that killer whales, sharks’ main predator, communicate using a variety of complex sounds. The sounds emitted by SharkStopper emulate the sounds of killer whales in conjunction with our patented frequency overlay. Our frequency, combined with sharks’ natural fear of their main predator, keeps the sharks at a safe distance.”

If you are an open water enthusiast you are going to want to learn more about this product and its innovative design.

Learn more about the SkarStopper through the Kickstarter campaign, the official website, Facebook and Twitter. (*The Kickstarter campaign ends October 4th.)

Which comes first…Prototyping or Crowdfunding?

April 17, 2014
3d-innovations.com

Many entrepreneurs out there have great ideas but get stuck on their first big leap into action and ask themselves…Should I prototype my idea or start crowdfunding first? Should you get started on a crowdfunding site with a great idea sketched onto a piece of paper or develop a functioning prototype to clearly communicate your idea. In short, the answer is that prototyping comes first. Having a prototype of your product idea maximizes your chances of receiving funding.

1. A prototype shows investors that you are serious. When you take the time to have a functioning prototype built you are showing any potential investor that you are committed to making this product a success. A prototype also gives you a chance to refine your idea and make sure that it is a viable product that can be built (and easily manufactured at a later date). As you will see on any crowdfunding website, a product video is key. Having an aesthetically pleasing prototype to show off in this video will help your marketing efforts and allow you to clearly explain and demonstrate your product.

2. First impressions are invaluable. Having a prototype not only provides investors with an idea about your product but it also gives them insight into you and your business. Investors want to see that you have thought this through, you are prepared and ready to execute. The quality, functionality and overall aesthetics of your prototype will allow investors to gauge your commitment and ability to handle future challenges.

3. Crowdfunding your way to success. While a prototype will help you raise capital for your product, it will also help you delve into product development and manufacturing in a more streamlined manner than if you were just starting from a paper sketch of your idea. A prototype provides a clear vision of your product and it will help you clearly communicate design and functionality aspects with your engineering and manufacturing partners.

Please feel free to contact us with any prototyping or product development questions you may have at info@3d-innovations.com
